Faith Goldy’s Mistake

by UncleWokie February 5, 2019 No Comments

If you’re not familiar with Faith Goldy, here’s a short recap:

Faith Goldy is a journalist/activist, formerly with Rebel Media, who is known for her political and social commentary on various topics such as mass migration, Islam, socialism, and other modern political subjects. Her work with Lauren Southern seems to have gathered, in retrospect, the most attention in terms of overall view counts (their dual-headed videos have millions of views).

Her most controversial and costly career decision, which put her on the mainstream media’s spotlight (and which ultimately contributed to her loss of job from Rebel Media) was her attendance on an “alt-right” video podcast wherein she said a controversial phrase known as the “14 Words”, for which her detractors labeled her a “neo-Nazi white supremacist”. More on that story later.

After her fall from grace, in late 2018, she ran for mayor of Toronto, with the promise to be “Tough on crime, easy on taxpayers!” She then tried to advertise her mayoral run by paying for advertisements on a TV station owned by Bell Media. Bell refused to air the ads, prompting Goldy to file a lawsuit against them in court.

CRTC rules in Canadian law state that, ““If a broadcaster sells advertising time to one candidate or party, other candidates and parties must also be given the opportunity to buy commercial airtime from that same broadcaster.”

The Judge who presided over the case ruled that he declined to hear the case entirely (which left Goldy in a de-facto state of loss on the lawsuit), and ordered Faith Goldy to personally pay Bell Media’s legal defense costs, about $43,000, something out of the norm for a case that involved a mayoral candidates’ campaign, not exclusively the candidate themselves.

Goldy clearly had her legal rights violated as both a citizen and a mayoral candidate. Goldys’ campaign had every right to purchase advertising time on the TV network that Bell Media owned, and Bell Media had no legal right under Canadian law to refuse her campaigns’ money for her ad. The judge also had an obvious bias, as in paragraph 94 of his ruling, as Goldy states, he simply refused to rule over her case, making her the de facto loser.

But the judges’ order left Goldy in a quandary. Clearly, all legal means of extracting a fair result from the legal system in Toronto was impossible. Or at least, difficult to find and see. But Goldy still had one means of peaceful revolt against a clearly rigged system: Refusal to pay.

A truly bold leader stands for what they believe in, and if Bell Media truly was in the wrong, then a courageous person would have simply refused to pay their wrongdoer. Goldy should have simply refused to pay.

And then what? What could the legal system of Toronto, or that judge, have done to Faith Goldy? What could they have really done to her?

Executed her in public?

Of course not. They would have most likely arrested her at some point in the legal process; if she owned property, they would have simply attached a lien against the property stemming from the judgment and foreclosed on it after her refusal to pay; if she refused to leave the property they would have arrested her, provoking public interest in her case. If she owned no property, they would probably have simply arrested her, provoking public interest in her case.

In doing so, they would have created a political martyr out of Faith Goldy which, regardless of how you feel about her particular political views or statements, she objectively did have her legal rights violated by the legal system of Canada – and if they can be blatantly biased against her because she’s not considered socially acceptable within the contemporary political Overton window, then as time goes on, and maybe discriminating against anyone who has ever worn a MAGA-hat becomes acceptable (and, in fact, can be expected over time, given the track record of numerous politicians and mainstream media pundits that consider the MAGA-hat to be the equivalent of a “KKK hood” or some comparison equally as idiotic and false), then you too can have your legal rights stripped and be discriminated against by the legal system as well because you once said something “offensive”, or committed a “thought crime” or held political views that offended someone, somewhere, or wore the “wrong” hat, or voted for the “wrong” politician,

Goldy should have let the notoriety of her case, and the clear political discrimination she became a victim of, accrue with her steadfast resilience in the face of mounting political headwinds. But instead, she folded too quickly. And that’s unfortunate for the rest of us, because now the precedent will stand (at least, in Canadian law) that if you’re just a little too politically-incorrect, that all laws protecting the rights of citizens of your country don’t actually apply to you, which should scare all of us – even those opposed to Faith Goldy’s ideas (or the ones they perceive her to embody).

Beware the power of legal precedent.
